Set in a North Carolina gold mine during the 1840s, Sunday Gold follows two 12-year-old girls—Lizzie, who is white, and Annis, an enslaved Black girl. Working side by side in harsh conditions, they confront the racial barriers between them while discovering the true value of education, friendship and freedom. Honest and thought-provoking, the play invites audiences to grapple with difficult questions about race, inequality and human connection in pre–Civil War America.
